Peggy Sandifer Hutton, 93, of Friendship, and Simsbury, Connecticut, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at the Sussman Hospice House in Rockland, after a fall that caused bleeding in her brain. She was surrounded by her family and passed peacefully.

Peggy was born on August 7, 1924 in Columbia, South Carolina, the daughter of Thelma and Clarence Earl Sandifer, Sr.

Peggy was one of a select group of women cadets selected to go to Penn State in 1942 to take an intensive engineering course, after which she was employed at Curtiss-Wright in Buffalo, New York, where she worked on aeronautical design.

It was in Buffalo where she met James Harkness Hutton and they were married on a snowy January day in 1945.

Together they raised four sons: James David, Thomas, Mark, and John.

Peggy was a life-long learner, with interests in many areas. She especially loved art, history, and travel. Peggy was the family genealogist and made many trips to historical sites and libraries to do research. Her list of volunteer activities included the PTA, Planned Parenthood, and tax preparation for the elderly. She was a volunteer and officer of the Roaring Brook Nature Center auxiliary in Simsbury, Connecticut, for more than 40 years. She was also an ardent feminist, and well known for her sharp wit and a great sense of humor.

She returned to university in the 1960s for a business and programming degree at the University of Las Vegas. The family moved to Simsbury in 1969 and she worked for Connecticut General Insurance for a number of years.

James and Peggy purchased a home in Friendship after his retirement and spent many summers there. Many memorable gatherings of family took place in her beloved home.

She was predeceased by her husband, James H. Hutton, and her son, Thomas E. Hutton.

She will be sadly missed by her three sons, James David Hutton and his wife, Susan, of Albuquerque, N.M.;, Mark Hutton and his wife, Hillary, of Vienna, Maine; and John Hutton and his partner, Pia Sjolin, of New Hartford, Connecticut; four grandchildren: Margaret Hutton, Tom Hutton, Ian Hutton, and Sean Hutton; two brothers: Earl Sandifer of Columbus, Georgia, and Robert Sandifer of Edisto Island, South Carolina.

She will also be sadly missed by her many dear friends.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the Friendship United Methodist Church 8 Shipyard St., Friendship.
