Panthers fall at the buzzer in state championship game

Murphy hits layup at the buzzer, gives Cape Elizabeth Class B title.

    PORTLAND — The Cape Elizabeth boys Western Class B champions trailed by five points with less than a minute left in the game and were able to pull off the upset over Eastern Class B champion Medomak Valley with a full court pass and layup by Ethan Murphy at the buzzer for the 44-42 win Friday night in Portland.

    An outstanding game, played at the Cross Insurance Arena, with both teams playing excellent defense throughout the game, came down to the fourth quarter and the Capers never gave up, even after the Panthers opened the final stanza with a 10-0 run before the Capers finally scored with 3:54 left in the game. 

    Medomak took the early lead 12-9 in the first quarter after Cape Elizabeth came out and scored the first seven points of the game. The Panthers then went on a 12-2 run to end the quarter. Both teams had a difficult time finding the basket in the second quarter with Medomak holding on for the 17-15 lead at the halftime break.

    The Capers came out strong in the third quarter and took the lead outscoring the Panthers 19-12 for the 5-point 34-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

    Medomak scored 10 points while holding Cape Elizabeth scoreless for the first four minutes and six seconds of the final quarter to take a 39-34 lead with 3:54 left on the clock.

    However, with time running out, the Capers did not give up with Murphy scoring at the buzzer to give Cape Elizabeth the gold ball for Class B. 

    Scoring for Cape Elizabeth were Murphy with 13 points; Jack O’Rourke 11; Finn Bowe nine; Edwin Glavin four; James Bottomley three; and Quinn Hewitt and Justin Guerette two each.

    Cape Elizabeth was 4-of-8 (50 percent) from the foul line and  had six three pointers, three from O’Rourke, one each from Murphy, Bowe and Bottomley.

    For Medomak Valley, Nicholas DePatsy had 14 points; Cameron Allaire 12; Micah Williamson nine; Noah Beck five; and Colton Spear two.

    The Panthers were 7-of-13 (54 percent) from the foul line and had two 3-pointers, one each from DePatsy and Beck. 

    Medomak Valley finishes the season 19-3 and are the State Class B runner ups. Cape Elizabeth also ends the season 19-3 as the 2015 State Class B Champions.

    After a quiet first half Allaire scored 11 of his 12 points in the second half, while Depatsy also scored 10 of his team high 14 in the second half. 

    The Panthers lose four player this year to graduation, Noah Beck, Micah Williamson, Colton Spear and Tyler Emerson. They will return an experienced team that will be led by Nicholas DePatsy and Cameron Allaire.
