New faces, new offerings at Rockland farmers’ market

ROCKLAND — The Rockland Farmers Market opened for the season Thursday morning at Harbor Park, and there were a few new faces and some new products mixed among the traditional traveling market vendors.

Katie McKinlay had samples of her homemade Rise Up and Persian Capon specialty granola mixes for visitors of the market at Harbor Park. Her Rise Up blend consists of Maine-grown gluten-free oats, Maine wildflower honey, Maine blueberries, dark chocolate, coconut and more. The Persian Capon is a blend highlighted by white chocolate, Cavendish banana coins, citrus blossoms and grapefruit.

McKinlay officially launched her business, Morning Cock Granola, May 1, in her kitchen with a Maine Home Food Processor’s license. She said she will be a regular at the Thursday farmers’ markets.

Patricia Havener occupied the booth next to McKinlay’s. Havener, of Friendship, is already known for her Lobster Treats for Salty Dogs, which is her way of helping to promote the lobster industry. The Havener family includes four generations of lobster fishermen. For the canines with sensitive stomachs, she has also created gluten-free, as well as smaller-sized versions for pint sized pups.

Following pressure from various sources seeking a lobster treat for humans, Havener said she and her husband, Greg, developed Gourmet Lobster Crackers. They brought the crackers to the New England Trade Show in March, and to Havener’s surprise, were awarded Best New Specialty Food Product.

Because Havener does not yet have the facilities to mass produce the crackers, supplies remain limited.

Christelle Munnelly of Copper Tail Farm in Waldoboro has been selling goat’s milk soap for five years. This year, she is also selling caramel sauce.

Bud and Linda Bailey continue to bring their jams, muffins, fudge and honey from North Whitefield.

Nancy Johnson of Ravenswood Flower Farm in Union has returned with her perennials and annuals. She is also selling the floral terrariums she made during the winter.

Also at the market May 14 were Brian and Jessica Farrar of Maine Water Buffalo Co. in Appleton. They will again open their property to visitors on Open Farm Day in July.

Maine Farmland Trust, which will be at the Rockland market once a month, is holding an event called Maine Fare on June 26 and 27 in Belfast. Activities will include chef demonstrations, DIY classes, farm tours, kids programs, a food forum, plus food and music.

The Rockland Farmers Market is held Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Harbor Park from May 14 to Oct. 29. Due to festivals in Harbor Park, the market is relocated to Snow Marine Park on Mechanic Street July 30 and Aug. 6.
