Michael Wayne Myrick, obituary
CUSHING — It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael Wayne Myrick, 74, of Cushing, on November 17, 2025, at MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital in Rockport.
Born on September 27, 1951, in Harrington, Maine, to Francis and Ilda (Burke) Myrick, Michael moved with his family to Port Clyde shortly after his birth. He attended the old St. George Elementary School and later Georges Valley High School, where he met his future wife of more than 50 years, Carla. He graduated with the class of 1970. Following high school, Mike attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute and proudly served in the Coast Guard Reserves throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Michael began his life on the water at just nine years old, hauling traps around Ram Island in the St. George River where his family spent their summers. His love for the ocean only grew stronger with time, becoming a defining part of who he was. Aboard the F/V Shannon Rose, he shared that passion with his children and grandchildren, teaching them the rhythms of the tides and the value of hard work. In addition to lobstering, Michael took pride in the many roles he held over the years, including work in various fisheries, caretaking, and plowing for the Town of Cushing. He treasured time spent with family on Ram Island, his beloved dogs, and enjoyed fishing and hunting whenever he could.
Michael was known for his joyfulness and his unmistakable, contagious laugh. He had a gift for storytelling, often entertaining friends and family with tales that grew a little larger each time they were told.
Deeply rooted in his faith, Michael served as a deacon of the Friendship Advent Christian Church for many years. More recently, he was an elder and board member at Pursuit Church in Rockland. He was also active in his community and industry, serving on the board of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, as a Zone D council member, and as a selectman for the Town of Cushing. In 2006, Michael was honored with the Golden V-Notch Award for his contributions to lobster industry research with the University of Maine—recognition of his dedication to sustaining the fishery he loved.
Michael was predeceased by his parents; his sisters Methyl Carlson and Peggy Reynolds; and his brothers-in-law, Curtis Young, Philip Reynolds, Wilfred Carlson, and Robert Simmons Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Carla (Young) Myrick, of Cushing; his sons, Matthew Myrick and his wife Kelli of Caribou, and Ryan Myrick and his wife Loraine Murray of Rockport; his daughter, Shannon Myrick-Green and her husband Tyler of Waldoboro; his sister Mary Jane Simmons of Friendship; his sister-in-law, Patricia Young of Mechanic Falls; his grandchildren, Breeya Myrick, Saoirse Hitz, Mickayla Hitz, Natalee Hitz, and Violet Myrick; one great-grandchild, and another eagerly awaited.
A service to celebrate Michael’s life will be held at the Pursuit Church in Rockland at a date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Michael’s memory may be made to the Pursuit Church, 215 Limerock Street, Rockland, ME 04841.
