Loyal runners start 2014 racing for a good cause

Here in Maine you either like winter or you don’t, at least that’s the way it has always been, yet it seems improbable the 50 plus runners and walkers lined up for the start of Wednesday’s Smokestack Grill “Set the Pace 5K” road race that is part of the Go! Malawi Race Series, all love winter.

However they were there to run in very frigid temperatures to help support the Go! Malawi mission to collaborate with rural Malawian communities to develop sustainable programs in education, health care, commerce, and conservation.

David Root of Hope finished first with a time of 18:41; Lauren Jellison of Camden was the fastest female with a time of 6:59. Phoebe Root, a 10 year old from Hope was the youngest runner and Art Warren at 78 years young was the elder steersman of the race.

The Go! Malawi running team sponsors a race series that starts with Wednesday’s race and goes through the year with the final race of the year being the Scare Me 5k Oct. 25.

The Go! Malawi Race Series is five 5K races  held in Camden and Rockland, Maine throughout the year.  Each race has its own identity and theme and offers unique African prizes! The courses are all scenic and for a good cause.

Here are the remaining four races in the series with this years dates, times and places.
Feb. 16, 10 a.m. “Luv Me 5K” at the Samoset Resort, Rockland.

March 15, 10 a.m. “Lucky Leprechaun 5K” at Trackside Bar & Grill, Rockland.

June 2, 9 a.m. “The First Summer Solstice 5K” at The First Bank, Union St. Rockland.

Oct. 25, 10:10 a.m. “Scare Me 5K” at Trackside Bar & Grill, Rockland.
