Thirty one seventh grade students participated in Trekkers Day January 7. Trekkers Day is an opportunity for seventh graders to preview the Trekkers program by participating in an entire day of activities lead by Trekkers' staff and volunteers.

This year's participants were students from Oceanside Middle School and St. George School. The daylong program was led by Program Manager Lindsey Evans, along with four student leaders, three adult volunteers and four program staff members. The group was separated into four teams to make the day run smoothly.

The day began in the Oceanside Middle School gym with a series of large and small group activities for students to get to know one other before heading to PITCH in Warren. The activities included many of Trekkers' famous team building and problem solving initiatives. There was even a Trekkers Olympics, which included a sleeping bag shuffle and non-cotton relay!

The purpose of Trekkers Day is to offer interested students a first-hand sampling of what Trekkers is all about. The enrollment period for the 7th grade programs started on December 1 and runs through February 13.

Trekkers hosted a Community Meeting on Monday, January 23 at 5:30pm at Oceanside Middle School. The purpose of this meeting was to inform students and their families about the overall program, explain Trekkers' selection process and share how students become eligible to participate. Applications were distributed. There are 40 spots available in the seventh grade program. Students did not have to attend Trekkers Day to apply for the core Trekkers program.

Trekkers is a nonprofit, outdoor-based, six-year mentoring program that connects young people with caring adults through expeditionary learning, community service and adventure-based education. Trekkers brings students and adult mentors together to build meaningful relationships over a period of six years. This year, Trekkers will serve more than 200 7th - 12th grade students from the communities of Cushing, Owls Head, Rockland, South Thomaston, St. George and Thomaston.
