Letter to the Editor: Why I am voting for Kathleen Meil

Thu, 06/09/2016 - 5:00pm

I look forward to voting for Kathleen Meil for State Representative on June 14. I first met her in a book club, no surprise to those who know her, and I have continually been impressed with her thirst for knowledge and thoughtful consideration of all sides of an issue. Because of that, there's no one I trust more to represent Camden, Rockport, and Islesboro in Augusta.

Kathleen understands the challenges of raising a family because she's living those challenges - just like us. As a working mom, she gets how important it is to support strong, healthy communities, and she knows that paid family leave and affordable, high-quality child care aren't just ideals - they're essential and deeply impact the families in our communities.

Kathleen has continually demonstrated her commitment to our community by volunteering in our schools, supporting STEM education and programs to encourage leadership in our young women, as well leading Rockport's library committee. She has showed grace, vision, and diplomacy throughout that process. Her leadership is about hard work, friendliness, and a desire to find common ground on difficult issues.

Our next State Representative is going to need to vote on important and complicated problems that affect our lives.  I admire her commitment, intelligence, and strength and know Kathleen will do the work, listen to the details, and make the kind of reasoned decisions that are needed to improve our communities. That's why I'm voting for Kathleen on June 14, and I hope you will, too.
