Legion members, volunteers remember veterans who served their country

CAMDEN — Members of American Legion War Memorial Post 30 and volunteers honored veterans in recent days by placing flags and memorial markers at the gravestones of veterans buried in Mountain View Cemetery, among others.

The annual remembrance is a long-standing tradition according to Cecil Dennison, Legion member, who organizes the flags and flag markers so that every veteran is honored.

“This tradition has gone on for decades, longer than you and me put together,” said Dennison.

Some of the veterans’ headstones date back to the Civil War and the Spanish American War.

Each year nearly 800 flags are placed at veterans’ headstones between the Mountain View and Oak Hill cemeteries in Camden. The Legion members who placed the flags at Mountain View on May 16 represented every branch of the military except for the Coast Guard.

Dennison said that in previous years, only about four members would gather to place the flags and as they got older, more help was needed. He credited Jeff Sukeforth and Rosey Gerry for getting the word out through their chapter newsletter.

“It means a lot to the families and community to see these veterans recognized for their service,” said Sukeforth.

The flags will remain at the veterans’ graves until Veterans Day.
