ROCKLAND — Join Penobscot Bay Language School for the kick-off event of a new intercultural community exchange program called “New Mainer’s Performance Showcase” featuring multicultural performance artists from around Maine and the world.

This is a grant funded quarterly event supported by the Onion Foundation. The March 26 inaugural event will feature Rockland’s very own Chef Jordan Benissan, of Me Lon Togo restaurant. Born in the West African nation of Togo, Benissan has years of experience traveling, teaching and performing West African music. He is an expert of polyrhythmic drumming and teaches music at Colby College in Waterville.

“Using a wide variety of instruments such as talking drums, djembes, Ewe drums, rattles, and bells, he brings his culture to people of all ages and backgrounds in Maine,” said PBLS, in a news release. “Audience participation is welcomed.”

This free community event has limited space – online registration required due to limited space. Tickets can be reserved by visiting www.penobscot.us. Registrants will be prompted to make a $5 suggested donation, which is entirely optional. If computer access is limited, please call 207 594-1084 to reserve a seat.

“Penobscot Bay Language School has worked with Mr. Benissan many times over the past few years; we are excited to have him back to the school to share his talents as a musician and teacher,” said the school.

Refreshments from Me Lon Togo restaurant will be available before and after the performance and group discussion. As a two way community dialog, audience members are encouraged to participate in the discussion with questions or comments following the performance.
