Men’s College Basketball: Green Mountain College 61, Maine Maritime Academy 59

Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Green Mountain College, 61-59 on Friday night in North Atlantic Conference action inside of the Eagle Dome.

The Mariners took an early 7-1 lead at 15:08, before the two teams exchanged threes to make it 10-4. The Eagles went on an eight-point run to take a two-point advantage with 11:21 to go in the first half. Dylan Price (Madison, Maine) made a jumper and hit one from the line to give the Mariners a one-point lead, but the Eagles used another eight-point run to take a 20-13 lead at 6:56.

The Mariners put together a nine-point run, led by five-straight points from Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) to take a 22-20 advantage with just under four minutes to play and Maine Maritime held onto the lead for the remainder of the half, taking a 33-25 lead into halftime.

The Eagles outscored the Mariners 17-12 in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, to close the gap to 45-42. Thomas Brown scored four-straight to give Green Mountain a narrow 46-45 lead. Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) and Sam Meklin (Rockland, Maine) hit back-to-back baskets to build a three-point lead for the Mariners at 6:21.

The two teams exchanged layups to keep the gap at three (51-48) but the Eagles scored seven-unanswered points to take a 55-51 lead at 3:34. A layup from Price at 3:10 closed the gap to 55-53, but the Eagles responded with a three-point basketball from Javier Lugris to rebuild the five-point lead.

Thayer splashed a three for the Mariners, cut the gap to two (58-56), but Lugris hit another three to keep it a five-point game with 1:43 to play. Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) hit a three for the Mariners at 1:15 to cut the Eagles' lead to 61-59, but Green Mountain hung on for the victory.

Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) led the Mariners with 14 points, two rebounds, and an assist, Thayer added 13 points, a game-high six assists, and two rebounds, and DePatsy added 12 points, five rebounds, and an assist.

Lugris ended the evening with 14 points, four rebounds, and an assist, Brown added a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, while also adding two assists and two steals, Kenneth Parker chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists and both Pierce Weatherspoon and Diante Warner added 10 points for the Eagles.

The Mariners fall to 3-13 overall and 0-9 in the NAC, while the Eagles improve to 8-6 on the season and 5-4 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. at Castleton University.
