Five spots open for race crew

Heron to race in Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

Wed, 04/09/2014 - 11:30pm

The schooner Heron, whose home port is Rockport, will be racing April 16-22 in the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, sailing from Falmouth Harbour, Antigua, on a 20-mile course into the Caribbean.

The annual regatta assembles yachts from all around the world to compete in four days of racing and fun, and it is considered one of the top classic yacht gatherings in the world. There have been some years when the beautiful classic boats have been joined by migrating humpback whales.

The regatta typically comprises 60 to 80 boats — traditional island sloops, classic schooners, ketches and yawls — that represent famous yacht designers of the world. The fleet includes sail-training tall ships and the classic America’s Cup J-Class sloops.

Antigua Classics is known for its friendly racing competition. Appreciation of the sheer beauty of these classics is a large part of the event. There is always time to get some good photos while racing.

There are still five spots available to sail aboard Heron as race crew for the event. For more information, email schoonerheron@gmail.com; or call 207-691-4192.
