ROCKLAND — A 19-year-old Spruce Head man was indicted on Feb.13 for manslaughter and driving to endanger from a crash that occurred in March 2014. The head-on collision caused the death of the driver and severely injured two passengers in the vehicle that was struck on Route 1 in Warren.

The Knox County Grand Jury indicted Samuel Simmons on three counts, including manslaughter and two counts of driving to endanger.

Alison Low, 38, of Warren, died at the scene of the crash. The two passengers in Low’s vehicle, her 18- year- old son Dustin Kimball, of Warren, and Olivia Blachet, 18, of Waldoboro, were both injured. They were treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Kimball was released on March 21 and Blachet was hospitalized for several months with serious injuries.

The accident occurred March 20, 2014 on Route 1 when Simmons’ vehicle, a 1997 GMC Sierra pick up truck, crossed the center line near the intersection of Western Road and struck head-on the Subaru Forester that Low was driving.

The court alleges that Simmons “did recklessly or with criminal negligence cause the death of Low” and also endangered the property of the passengers in her vehicle, which caused serious bodily injury to Blanchet.

Soon after the crash, Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison confirmed that drugs, alcohol and texting did not attribute the cause of the crash.

On Friday, Feb. 13, Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Baroody said that further information will be released regarding the investigation as the case proceeds to trial.
