AUGUSTA — If you were one of the many people seeking information from maine.gov this morning, your computer wasn’t having a fit, it was someone targeting the State of Maine web portal for attack, according to Gov. Paul LePage’s office.

In an email to the media, state Department of Administrative and Financial Services Director of Communications and Legislative Affairs Alexander Willette said, “Earlier today, the State of Maine's web portal, www.maine.gov, began experiencing technical issues. Technicians with the Information Resource of Maine, InforMe, began investigating and discovered that maine.gov was being targeted via a denial-of-service attack.”

A DoS attack seeks to make a service unavailable to users by overloading the servers that host it with external data requests. This prevents legitimate users from accessing the service or site under attack.

"It appears a 'denial-of-service attack' made the state's official website, Maine.gov, temporarily unavailable. Attacks to high-profile government websites are very common, and a thorough investigation is underway. The important thing to note is that this was in no way a security breach, and we currently have no evidence to suggest that any personal information has been compromised," said Willette.
