WALDOBORO — At 3:49 p.m. on Monday afternoon, February 8, the Waldoboro Fire Department was paged to 825 Washington Road in Waldoboro for a reported mattress fire inside a residence.

On arrival, Waldoboro Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer observed heavy smoke coming from the residence and struck a second alarm, activating mutual aid companies from Friendship, Warren and Union.

The two residents of the home, Marlene and Irville Luce, had gotten out safely.

Initial attack was made in the room where the fire originated and quickly discovered that it had extended through an open door and void spaces into the second floor, according to the Chief. Additional mutual aid was requested from Washington and Thomaston for personnel.

Weather conditions slowed response due to road conditions. Crews worked for several hours extinguishing the fire and overhauling the scene. Heavy damaged caused by fire was contained to the main house, smoke, heat and water throughout the rest of the structure.

Investigators from the Maine Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the cause of the fire. Two of the couples three dogs also made it out safely and one dog was lost in the fire. Waldoboro Police, EMS and Public Works Departments assisted at the scene.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 7:55 p.m.
