ROCKPORT — Dorothy Bates (formerly TenEyck), 65, passed away July 17, 2014, at her home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 24, 1948, in Phillipsburg, N.J., Dottie was the daughter of Alfred and Irene Bates. She spent her early childhood on her parent's farm in New Jersey before moving to Portland, Conn.. Moving to Maine in 1976, she eventually settled in Freeport and became a respected child care provider. In addition to running her own business, Dottie managed the Freeport Before and After School Care program and was a member of the Freeport School Board.

After briefly moving to Middletown, Conn., she most recently retired to her parents' home in Rockport.

Dottie is survived by her brother, William Bates of Statesville, N.C.; her children, Leah Russell and her husband, Keith, of Largo, Fla., and Kristofer Johnson and his wife, Guylene, of South Pasadena, Calif.; and three loving grandchildren. At Dottie's request, no services will be held.
