THOMASTON — Signs for Aspen Dental and Mattress Firm will be appearing alongside that of Walmart and Tractor Supply Company as early as late spring, according to Thomaston Code Enforcement Officer William Wasson.

The two new chains will anchor a four-tenant, 11,000-square-foot, one-story building and parking lot adjacent to Route 1. The other two tenant spaces remain vacant.

According to Wasson, the Thomaston planning board originally expressed concerns regarding the appearance of the building, designed by DiDonato Architects of Kennebunkport.

However, the planning board “made nice decisions,” Wasson said in regards to the design, which includes rooftop parapets to hide machinery.

The real estate company that initially purchased the land where the two current retailers are now located divided the land into three major subdivisions. Walmart bought the largest lot, and Tractor Supply and its parking lot occupies half of another lot.

The third lot, soon to be occupied by Aspen Dental, was originally designed for a restaurant. However, Wasson has learned that the “economy is not that great, and restaurants just are not expanding.”

Benchmark Construction of Westbrook is the general contractor for this project.
