Criterion Film Series continues with Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Modern Times’
ROCKLAND - The Criterion Series, a monthly film series sponsored by The Criterion Collection, continues with a screening of Modern Times (1936) on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. Criterion Series films are hosted in person by TCM (Turner Classic Movies) film presenter, and Strand Board Member, Alicia Malone.
Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin’s last outing as the Little Tramp, puts the iconic character to work as a giddily inept factory employee who becomes smitten with a gorgeous gamine (Paulette Goddard). With its barrage of unforgettable gags and sly commentary on class struggle during the Great Depression, Modern Times—though made almost a decade into the talkie era and containing moments of sound (even song!)—is a timeless showcase of Chaplin’s untouchable genius as a director of silent comedy.
The Criterion Collection was established in 1984, with a mission to preserve important classic and independent films from around the world and make them available to the public. Criterion also supports community movie theaters, and their sponsorship of this year-long series of films allows the Strand to screen a wide range of acclaimed, hard-to-see movies.
Tickets are $8/Matinee Admission, $7/Strand Members, and will be available at the box office 30 minutes prior to show time. For more information, visitwww.rocklandstrand.com or call (207) 594-0070 EX 3. The Strand Theatre is located at 345 Main St., Rockland.
