CAMDEN — Two New York City residents who were charged by Camden Police Detective Curt Andrick with felony theft and burglary following a series of business break-ins in July, will be making their initial court appearances in November.

The attorneys for Talicia Martins, 21, of Manhattan, N.Y., and Jacob Flanagan, 20, also of Manhattan, filed motions to continue their initial appearances in Knox County Unified Court from the original date scheduled for Sept. 25 since they are both currently undergoing substance abuse treatment, according to the court document.

Attorney Eric Morse, of Strout and Payson in Rockland, who is representing Flanagan, said in the motion, “it is not in the best interests of the defendant to interrupt his treatment program to make the trip to Maine for his initial appearance.”

Martins is being represented by Attorney George Dilworth, of Drummond Woodsum in Portland. Dilworth stated in the motion that his client is also undergoing substance abuse treatment.

Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Baroody did not object to the motions filed by the two attorneys.

On Sept. 19, Judge Susan Sparaco granted the defendants’ motions to continue their initial court appearances.

Martins and Flanagan will now appear together in Knox County Unified Court on Nov. 13.

The pair were both charged with three counts of burglary and felony theft for allegedly stealing money at the Smoothie Shack, Francine, and Camden Cone in Camden. Andrick and Officer Brook Hartshorn began talking to business owners and piecing together the information after receiving several calls Monday, July 31, from employees of businesses discovering evidence of forced entry, as well as cash missing from drawers.

Martins was arrested in the evening of Aug. 3 on Chestnut Street in Camden. Flanagan was arrested on Aug. 4 after he went to the police station.

They were transported to the Knox County Jail where cash bail was set at $1,500 apiece.
