Camden — Bertha D. Hopper, obituary

CAMDEN — Bertha Drinkwater Hopper, 98, died Nov. 5, 2012, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Born in Searsmont Jan. 22, 1914, she was the daughter of Clinton and Alice (Mahoney) Butler and married Robie Drinkwater. In 1934, Bertha and Robie moved to Camden. She was employed for many years as a supervisor in the burling room at the Seabright Woolen Mill. Later, she worked at Tibbetts Industries for a number of years, retiring when she was in her 70s. Mr. Drinkwater died Oct. 9, 1983. Bertha married Cyril Hopper and they were married just a year and a half before he passed away.

Mrs. Hopper was well known by her family and friends for her homemade molasses cookies. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, cooking and attending Beano at the Camden American Legion. She was a member of the Augusta Spiritualist Church and a former member of the Megunticook Grange.

Surviving are her three children, Harold Drinkwater and his wife, Dorothy, Maxine Simmons, and Walter Drinkwater and his wife, Glenna, all of Camden; four grandchildren, Charles Simmons III and his wife, Miranda, of St. Albans, Julie Landwehr and her former husband, Peter, of Camden, Kurt Drinkwater and his wife, Amy, of Glen Cove, and Todd Drinkwater and his wife, Kendra, of Standish; nine great-grandchildren, Ryan Landwehr, Adam Landwehr, Evan Drinkwater, Addie Drinkwater, Morgan Drinkwater, Sage Drinkewater, Luke Drinkwater, Molly Simmons and Matthew Simmons; and a special friend, Jeannette Dean. Bertha was predeceased by two husbands, Robie Drinkwater and Cyril Hopper; a son, Lawrence Drinkwater; a son-in-law, Charles Simmons Jr.; and two brothers, Clyde Butler and Ralph Butler.

Calling hours are Thursday, Nov. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. on at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St. in Camden. A graveside service will be held Friday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden.
