    New director of MESHE

CAMDEN — Edwin Morong, of Camden, has been named executive director of Maine Employers for Safety and Health Excellence (MESHE).

MESHE is a volunteer, nonprofit comprised of safety professionals and SHARP/SHAPE designated employers from throughout Maine. The MESHE organization promotes model safety and health practices, and the development of Safety Culture with the goal of reducing work related injury and illness of employees.

SHARP (Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program) is a private sector OSHA program that recognizes companies that meet or exceed OSHA safety standards. Less than two thousand companies hold SHARP designations in the entire United States. SHAPE (Safety and Health Award for Public Employers) is a Bureau of Labor Standards program that recognizes public sector employers who maintain exemplary safety and health management programs

Morong is also vice president of Yachting Solutions in Rockport. He has led Yachting Solutions' Safety and Environmental program for more than ten years.

Morong said: "From the beginning we (Yachting Solutions) understood the value of safety compliance from a liability and loss of production time perspective. Additionally, we care a great deal about our employee's/friend's wellbeing. We committed to being pro-active in our quest for a safe work environment, and utilized the free advice and training available from MESHE and SafetyWorks (MDOL); with their guidance we achieved SHARP designation for our two facilities and established a ten year record of zero serious injuries".

He continued, "To achieve safety excellence, It is not enough just to be safety compliant, we need to coach our workforce to Think Safety everyday on every job assignment to reduce the safety risks of the work environment. MESHE's new Safety Culture Mentorship Program will match an established safety professional (MESHE Member) with companies seeking to start or elevate their safety program."

Bob Burdick, chairman of the board, Maine Employers for Safety and Health Excellence said, "We are looking forward to working with Mr. Morong. His business leadership will be a great addition in directing MESHE's new Safety Culture and Mentorship program."
