The Study Hall has been offering SAT Prep to the Mid Coast Area for the past nine years. We have a formula that maximizes students SAT scores and alleviates the stress associated with taking such an important test. Every Junior attending a public school in the State of Maine will be required to take the SAT on May 3, 2014. Here at The Study Hall we offer SAT Prep Classes and One-on-One Prep in two subject areas: Verbal (Writing and Critical Reading) and Math, allowing the parent and student to choose which classes best fit their needs. Below is a brief outline of each of the sections on the SAT.

The Writing section of the SAT exam includes an essay as well as grammar and usage questions. While the essay brings anxiety for most, it’s the multiple choice questions that can make or break your writing score. The multiple choice section is worth 2/3 of the overall writing section score and consist of usage, sentence, and paragraph correction questions. Students will be expected to identify and correct possible errors in sentences and paragraphs. The essay portion of the section contains a prompt that students have 25 minutes to respond to.  Students are expected to write a 300-400 word persuasive essay using their own experiences and knowledge.

The Critical Reading portion of the SAT exam test students reading comprehension and vocabulary skills.  The analogy section that most of as all know and love was eliminated years ago, but students will still have to deal with sentence completion questions and short and long reading comprehension passages.

The Math section of the test has multiple choice and grid-in questions. The grid-in questions are designed to have students produce their own answers and grid them in. There is no penalty for answering the grid-in questions incorrectly, so students are encouraged to answer all of them. All of the math questions are subject specific and include Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. The Study Hall is offering two Math Prep classes. One designed for mainstream students, and the other designed for students who excelled on the Math section of the PSATs.

The SAT is a 3 hour and 45 minute test that is scored on a 600-2400 scale. The importance of the test itself, for college admissions, placement, and to SAVE $$$, should motivate all Juniors to seek preparation. Call The Study Hall today at 236-3949 or email Rockport@TheStudyHall.com for more information on our Group or One-on-One tutoring options. The Study Hall is currently enrolling students in their Spring Small Group Classes that are scheduled to start the week of March 16th.
