Rockport dedicates annual town report to longtime director Steve Beveridge

ROCKPORT — Ten minutes before he was due to arrive at the Rockport Town Office, the Richardson Room there had filled with family, coworkers and friends. It was to be a surprise, but Beveridge knew something was up — there were a lot of cars in the parking lot, including that of his wife, Cheryl. And then, all the guys from Public Works were lined up against the wall, and his mother, children and grandchildren looking expectantly at the door.
In his typical understated style, Beveridge sauntered in, grinning, to applause and laughter. Town Manager Rick Bates greeted him, holding the dedication plaque, and announced that Beveridge was this year’s recipient.
“In Rockport, when you give this out, the guy — he dies,” laughed Beveridge.
“I know how important you are to this community,” said Bates.
The annual report dedication, written by Rockport Administrative Secretary Stacey Parra, reads:
“’Just a little bit of history.’” The man behind the saying has served Rockport for more than 26 years as the Public Works Director. He stepped down January 1 this year and assumed the position of Assistant Public Works Director so that he could work a little less and spend more time on the farm and with his family. To Steve, this position is almost like retirement.
“Rockport has had the privilege of sending fond goodbyes to many long-term loyal employees. Steve is a big part of that. Even after four months, I still pick up the phone and call Steve. It’s a habit that’s just hard to break. If there’s a question that needs to be answered, Steve was always the person to call. Not a day goes by that people aren’t calling saying, “Where’s Steve? I need Steve.”
“Rockport saw a lot of growth in the past 26 years through Steve’s management. He had the knowledge and contacts to see us through many projects with the ability to save money or get us a bargain along the way.
“He was well known for coming to the budget meetings in his green suit. When he got teased about it, he would joke and say, ‘when you are coming to ask for more than a million, you better look like a million.
“Steve handles multiple budgets for Rockport and even on the spot could answer almost all questions thrown his way, and off the top of his head. Steve would tell anyone how it was, and do his best to get people to see things his way.
“We have welcomed a new public works director, Mike Young, after two years as the assistant public works director. Basically, they did a swap.
“Fortunately for many of us, coworkers past and present, boards and committees, citizens, and those just stopping by, it has been a privilege to know the man to whom we are dedicating this report. It has been a pleasure to serve with you and the town is grateful that you are staying on to guide us.”
