Crocketts throw down $5,000 bleacher donation match challenge
ROCKPORT — Charlie and Penny Crockett are not only long-time teachers in the Midcoast, but they have been coaches, Camden Hills Regional High School Washington trip organizers, sports broadcasters and school supporters. In an effort to boost the Camden Hills Community Bleacher Project up over its last hurdle, the Crocketts have issued a challenge and agreed to match any size donation made through June 19, up to a total of $5,000.
The Crocketts are especially hoping to reach out to the well-over 3,000 Windjammer students who have gone on the Washington Trip over the past 30 years ( 1985 - 2013). The trip is still annually funded by a donation established in the 1930s by a community member.
“That gift to the community is an excellent example of the ‘Pay It Forward’ principle we stress in each Washington Trip organizational meeting. The Challenge is an opportunity for anyone who went to Camden-Rockport or Camden Hills to contribute in any way, large or small, to build a project that will benefit future generations of students, parents, fans and visitors - in this case having decent bleachers and a press box for Windjammer soccer, football, lacrosse, and track and field games and events,” said the Crocketts is a press release Sunday.
The Crocketts are asking the help of all Windjammer graduates to spread the news to as many classmates as possible about this Crockett Challenge. Donations of any size are appreciated. Donations from individuals will be combined to count toward a Brick Paver ($150 or $300) or a Bleacher Row ($1,000) to be named for a class or a Washington trip year. Amounts of $150 and $300 will be recognized by a Brick Paver, which can be printed with the name of an individual, class, team, classmate, faculty member or business, etc. More information on the Bleacher Project is available on the website and on Facebook.
To be counted as part of the Crockett Challenge, donations should be made out to Camden Hills Community Bleacher Project and sent to the Crocketts at 648 Camden Road, Hope, ME 04847. The Washington trip year should be included so that the donation will be counted with others from the class to add up to a Brick Paver or Bleacher Row, labeled for example "Washington Trip 1999, Class of 2000." Along with the donation, the Crocketts would appreciate their former students including a note sharing a favorite memory of their Washington trip. Anyone donating to the Crockett Challenge will have their names displayed in the Press Box. A tally of donations from the Crockett Challenge will be announced Saturday, June 21 at 6:30 a.m., just before the class of 2015 departs on the Washington trip of 2014 - the 30th year the Crocketts have led this trip.
To date, the Bleacher Project has received $105,000 in donations and pledges, allowing the initial order of the bleachers to be made.
Community members have stepped up and donated construction materials and labor, reducing the total cost to about $150,000, but more donations are needed to complete the funding of the project.
The bleacher project includes a 650-seat set of bleachers and a press box at CHRHS’s Don Palmer Field.
