Community, friends shake Camden at annual Dancing with the Local Stars

CAMDEN — Graceful, energetic, beautiful, entertaining, raucous and heart-touching all, the dancers and troupes with the Dancing with the Local Stars made the Camden Opera House glow with community spirit May 9, during the sixth annual fundraiser for Wayfinder Schools. Every seat was filled, and by the end of the show, the audience was dancing and the house was shaking.
The popular annual event assembles professional dancers and community members willing to let go of stage fright, learn some new steps and wow their friends and families with what they’ve learned.
It’s a fundraiser and it is a community builder, a night when students, novices and performers all get on stage together, help each other, and support Wayfinder Schools (formerly the Community School).
Wayfinder Schools, based in Camden and New Gloucester, offer relational learning programs that transform high school education in residential and home-based environments. The mission is to provide students with skills and experience “necessary to discover their strengths, connect with their families, practice personal responsibility, and contribute to their communities...” And in the end, a high school diploma from the State of Maine.
The students all danced, performing “the Dancing Jukebox,” a hiphop choreographed by Kea Tesseyman. They also performed a freestyle to “Happy.”
Wayfinder dancers included Kalar Abdi, Carlos Andrade, Keyanna Barry, Mitch Bartlett, Emily Bennett, Danielle Bixby, Skylar Brown, Megan Collamore, Zac Conley, Ibraheem Deek, Joelle Heap, Katelyn Kribel, Cheyann Penniman, Alix Martin, Ethan Meigs, Christine Boudreau, Oren Stevens and Alexis Iammarino.
