Rockland region schools eliminate positions to trim budget
ROCKLAND — Voting unanimously, 10-0, the RSU 13 school board approved Thursday evening, May 1, a $27,103,985 budget for its upcoming 2014-2015 fiscal year. Central to the budget process was the elimination of several positions for RSU 13 schools. Board members cut some positions and retained others that had come under discussion.
According to Steve Roberts, chairman of the RSU 13 board, a split 5-5 vote kept the district’s business manager position intact and dismissed the recommendation to replace that position with an accountant. The current contract with Business Manager Scott Vaitones expires June 30.
Positions eliminated included the industrial technology position for fifth and sixth grades and one world language position (two had been recommended for cuts).
The Oceanside West principal vacancy will be filled by Thomaston Grammar School Principal Susan Stillwell. Stillwell is also principal of Owls Head Central School and will give up that position to Neal Guyer, the director of school improvement.
One library media position will be cut (two were recommended), as will be that of a social worker at South School, an industrial technology tech position, one administrative position at Oceanside West and an educational technician at the Oceanside West library.
According to Roberts, the board will also take $88,207 from retiree savings to help reduce the budget.
RSU 13 school board members will this week sign the warrant to place the budget before the voters on June 10. A public meeting will be held May 27, at 5:15 p.m. at Oceanside West and give the public an opportunity to view and ask questions.
