Great Diaper Change looking to break Guinness Record
CAMDEN — Ready to help break a Guinness World Record? All you need is a baby and a diaper this Saturday at the Clean Bee Laundry, 83 Elm Street in the Reny’s Plaza. At 10:30 a.m. the Great Cloth Diaper Change will take place. Last year, the Guinness Book verified that the record was broken by changing 8,301 cloth diapers at one time at 182 qualifying locations in 15 countries. Clean Bee will participate this year to try and set a new world record for 2014.
The event was scheduled to happen the same week as Earth Day and in conjunction with the Maine Cloth Diaper Company to show that cloth diapers are a real option for today’s modern families. Each year, billions of disposable diapers enter landfills where it takes them hundred’s of years to decompose.
To date, more than 20 families are registered to participate.
Jenifer Temple, owner of Clean Bee said it was a great opportunity for Clean Bee and the Maine Cloth Diaper Association to work together.
“It brings families together around a common cause, so we can better support the cloth diapering community,” she said. “In its fourth year, the event will bring together communities from around the globe.”
Whitney Carpentier is the manager at Clean Bee. She said it will be a wonderful event where babies all over the world will be changed at the same time.
“I doesn’t have to be your baby if you want to participate, but you should have some affiliation with the baby,” she said. “We’re going to change the babies right here in the laundromat on the tables. We’re promoting the event and so is Maine Cloth Diaper Company and cloth diapers are really big now. We should get a lot of people.”
Whitney said that Clean Bee has its own cloth diaper service.
“We sell a lot of cloth diapers,” she said. “We do a lot of diapers for customers and we have a lot of customers who do their own cloth diapers at home and then bring them in for stripping. After a while, any cloth diaper will build up a coating on it from chemicals in the detergent and fabric softeners. Stripping is removing all chemicals from the diaper so it’s more absorbent.”
