Coast Guard donates new shed to Thomaston Recreation
THOMASTON — This week, the Thomaston Recreation Department received a pleasant surprise for their Little League field.
According to Recreation Director Misty Start, the U.S. Coast Guard donated a new shed to help store materials and supplies for the field.
“The U.S. Coast Guard has donated countless hours to the Thomaston Recreation Department over the last couple of years through volunteer coaching positions, officiating and field maintenance,” Start said.
Start added that several members of the local Coast Guard, stationed in Rockland, have played “major volunteer roles for the department” – namely, Rockland Station Chief Warrant Officer Justin Uyttewaal, Chief Petty Officer Marc Moore, Chief Petty Officer Ed Martin, First Petty Officer Adam Lempke and First Petty Officer Keith Stinson.
Of the five officers, Start said, “They bring so much to our programs. You see our Little League coaches, Moore and Martin, not only coaching our kids to be great athletes, but they coach them to be respectful, helpful and ambitious young men.”
The Thomaston Recreation Department was in need of a new shed because the old one was “far too small.” And since several officers at the Coast Guard station volunteer on a regular basis with the Recreation Department, they knew first hand that a new shed was needed.
“The Thomaston Recreation Department is deeply grateful for the time and talent these men and their families have shared with our community,” Start said.
