Camden traffic alert: Building project to cause Route 1 delays, May 27-29
CAMDEN — A section of 61 Elm Street (Route 1) in Camden will be under construction to lay new water and sewer line connections to serve a building project site. The utility work will mean delays and traffic will be limited to one lane beginning at approximately 8 pm., Tuesday, May 27 and continuing through Thursday, May 29.
The work area for traffic heading south will be just beyond the intersection of Union and Elm streets. For northbound traffic, the work area will be just before the intersection of Union and Elm streets. The location is near Village Variety convenience store and Congregational Church.
Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes through Camden.
The project entails constructing a new $398,000 four-unit community living facility for Coastal Opportunities, the Camden nonprofit that assists adults with developmental disabilities to become participating members in the Midcoast. Coastal Opportunities has been in Camden more than forty years, and has operated a living facility in a house adjacent to the Elm Street Congregational Church.
Plans now call for tearing that old building down and constructing a new home on the lot that the nonprofit is purchasing from the church.
The Camden Planning Board approved the site plans earlier this winter, and Camden Code Enforcement Officer Steve Wilson is now reviewing the new facility plans.
The existing Coastal Opportunities building at 59 Elm Street will be demolished after the new building is completed.
The town advises: “Please be prepared for delays and detours. People are advised to seek alternate routes.”
Farley and Sons, Inc., of Rockport, is the contractor for the work.
