Waldoboro apartment fire prompts response from two counties
WALDOBORO — Heavy smoke showing from the front and rear sides of an apartment unit in Waldoboro prompted a response from several fire departments Thursday evening, December 27.
The fire was eventually attributed to an electric dryer, in use and located in the rear room of the apartment, according to Waldoboro Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer, in a news release.
Waldoboro Fire Department was dispatched to the three-story apartment complex at 76 Marble Avenue around 5:15 p.m.
“When crews arrived on scene, heavy smoke was showing from an apartment unit on the front of building and heavy fire from a window in the rear,” according Smeltzer’s report. “A fire crew attacked the fire through the rear window, while a second crew advanced a hose line through the front door and located the fire in a back corner room.”
Fire departments from Damariscotta, Thomaston, Friendship, Cushing, Nobleboro, and Warren were called in for assistance.
A single resident was in the apartment where the fire started. Several other apartments were also occupied at the time the fire was discovered. Everyone made it out of the building safely.
Several pets were located and reunited with their owners.
All residents, with the exception of the apartment where the fire occurred, were able to return to their apartments after the building was cleared by the fire department around 8:30 p.m.
The Red Cross was contacted to assist to resident whose apartment was destroyed by the fire.
There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.
Also assisting on scene were Waldoboro Police Department, Waldoboro EMS and Central Maine Power.
