GRAY — The National Weather Service has upgraded Tuesday’s winter storm watch to a winter storm warning, with heavy snow, which remains in effect from noon today through 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. For coastal Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties, the forecast is for accumulations of 8 to 12 inches of heavy snow, on top of the 2-feet of blowing and drifting snow that fell during winter storm Orson, Feb. 13.
Light snow or a rain and snow mix is expected to begin around midday or early afternoon Wednesday. The mixed precipitation will change back to snow in the evening and will become heavy at times overnight. Snow will continue into Thursday morning before ending around midday, according to the NWS.
This will also add to the running total that has seen many areas receive nearly 3-feet of snow in the last week. The weight of the recent snowfall will likely become a hazard for some rooftops. Also, heavy wet snow near the coastline may lead to isolated power outages if snowfall starts to bring down tree limbs.
Winds will be east, 15 to 25 mph; visibilities will be one-quarter mile or less at times; and temperatures will be in the lower 20s to lower 30s Fahrenheit.
A winter storm warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
