NORTH HAVEN — – Frederick W. Popp Jr. died Jan. 9, 2013. He was born in Passaick, N.J., June 11, 1924, the son of Frederick W. Sr. and Kathleen Dyer Popp.

After completing the seventh-grade, he moved with his family to Melrose, Mass., where he attended local schools and was a 1942 graduate of Melrose High School.

Mr. Popp entered the U.S. Army and was chosen to participate in the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Connecticut. Upon the unforeseen closing of that program, he served in the infantry in the European Theater. Returning to the United States, he was hospitalized at Fort Devens in Devens, Mass., where he began college studies at a branch of the University of Massachusetts and then moved to Amherst. Mr. Popp graduated from that institution in 1950, having earned a degree in engineering.

On Oct. 21, 1950, he married Helen Mae Mitchell in Easthampton, Mass.

He was first employed as a production engineer with Carter Clothing Company and later joined the Hunnewell Corporation. At Hunnewell and at two other companies, he worked with people amassing materials for the specialized production of pieces for various spacial devices.

For 35 years, the Popp's resided in North Reading, Mass., where they made many friends whom they often visited. Fred enjoyed singing in the North Reading Glee Club and the North Reading Congregational Church Choir.

In later life, Mr. Popp moved with his wife to North Haven, where his mother had re-established the home her father owned. Frederick and Helen moved into the home his uncle, Chester Dyer, had built for his wife, Ida. There they enjoyed life with many friends, especially involvement in the Grange, the North Haven Baptist Church choir, the Historical Society, many town boards and bridge.

Mr. Popp leaves many relatives. Among them are his cousins, James and Bernard Dyer of North Haven, Lloyd Dyer of Reno, Nev., and Raymond Perkins of Waldoboro; as well as his brother-in-law, George E. Mitchell and his family of Bayport, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held Friday, May 3, at 11 a.m. at North Haven Baptist Church. The Rev. David Macy and Dr. Robert Bach will co-officiate. Interment will follow at Sea View Cemetery.
