Winter storm warning issued for Knox and Waldo counties
GRAY — The National Weather Service has now issued a winter storm warning for snow and sleet for Knox and Waldo counties until 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16.
The day's early morning sleet and freezing rain did not last long, as it turned over to snow by 7:30 a.m., and then the falling snow became heavy at times, as much as an inch an hour.
For the remainder of the day, winds will be north 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph and visibilities as low as a quarter mile at times.
Snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is likely, and the snow will continue Saturday afternoon, mixing with or changing to sleet at times.
Temperatures will be in the mid-20s Fahrenheit.
Following are early closings that have been reported so far:
• Owls Head Transportation Museum will close at 3 p.m. today.
• Penobscot Bay YMCA youth programming canceled.
• Penobscot Bay YMCA facilities closed at noon.
• Rockport Public Library closed at noon.
• The Coastal Children's Museum is closed.
