Thievery reported at Rockport’s commercial fishing wharf
ROCKPORT — Sometime between 4 p.m., Aug. 3, and 4 a.m., Aug. 4, thieves peeled back the lock on a shack door where Rockport’s commercial fishermen conduct business and stole various items, including yellow and green buoys with trawl lines attached.
They dragged empty lobster crates across the parking lot, leaving marks in the pavement, and hauled away surplus bumper rubber that had been left over from construction of new docks at the harbor two weeks ago. As well, stainless steel pumps were taken.
The lock on the Mainely Lobster shack door, at 2 Main St., had been unscrewed and bent backward. Mainely Lobster sells bait to the fishermen and buys the lobster when they return to harbor after checking their traps.
In total, 10 empty lobster crates, constructed of heavy-duty plastic, were stolen. They are worth approximately $64 each, and even more on the black markets, the fishermen said.
A white and grey lunch cooler containing a tie-dye long-sleeve J&J T-shirt and a pack of cigarettes had been stolen.
The box of dog biscuits, which are popular with the canines that stop by regularly, remained intact, “although singles may have gone missing,” said one person close to the operation.
A similar break-in occurred two months ago and the perpetrator was never apprehended.
In a separate set of incidents, the Porta-Potty at the dock has been repeatedly been vandalized, to the point that it will no longer remain open to the public.
“Employees only, now,” said those in charge.
Rockport Police are investigating the Aug. 3 theft.
