Camden Police warn of Central Maine Power scam
CAMDEN – Camden Police have had several complaints in the last few days from Camden residents and businesses who are receiving calls from someone claiming they are from Central Maine Power.
According to Randy Gagne, Camden Police Chief, the caller advises the parties that they are delinquent with CMP and if they do not pay the amount specified within 30 minutes their power will be shut off immediately.
Gagne is requesting that anyone who receives this type of call hang up and notify the police department.
“CMP does not call people and ask them to purchase a pre-paid credit card to make payments on their accounts. Anyone calling requesting funds of any type involving pre-paid cards or money wire transactions are scammers,” Gagne said.
The CMP website states that “utility customers can be a convenient target for scammers because unlike retail business customers, most everyone is a customer of an energy company and pays utility bills.” CMP also advises customers to check their account balance and any past-due amount status on their secure website at cmpco.com.
Individuals who think they have been targeted should contact their local law enforcement agency or the Camden Police at 236-3030.
