Calf unveiling, including a huge heifer born Saturday morning, at Aldermere Farm

ROCKPORT — It’s one of the sure signs that spring is here and summer is just around the corner. The annual calf unveiling at Aldermere Farm May 9 showcased the farm’s newest members, but it was so much more and all hands-on, much to the delight of the children there.
There were the calves and lambs and baby pigs, honey and food, including grilled Galloway burgers. The sounds of musicians could be heard, crafts, yarn and woven goods from farms. There was a rock climbing wall for kids and demonstrations of how a bee hive works by Dave and Holly Edwards.
Joelle Aldbury, office and outreach manager at Aldermere Farm, just completed her first week on the job.
“It’s so great,” she said. “It’s been an amazing first week. I got to see a calf being born today, I did gardening earlier this week and I met the teen Ag-crew. It’s been overwhelming, but wonderful.”
Ron Howard, general manager of the farm, said a record number of people turned out for the calf unveiling.
“It’s cool and even a little busy, but that didn’t stop people from coming out,” he said. “It’s one of our programs where we really welcome the community and share with local farms.”
Howard said some brought lambs and pigs to be part of the event. There was even a rabbit and a goat, a sheep-shearing demonstration; all the animals were hands on for people to touch and pet.
A calf that birthed that morning was one of the biggest the farm had ever had, weighing in at 96 pounds.
“Momma had no problems with the delivery and she is taking very good care of her large one,” said Howard. “It’s possible we’ll have another one today and there are several more to go.”
Howard admitted that watching the kids and the looks on their faces as they touched the animals was priceless.
“Just a few moments ago I overheard on of the kids in with the lambs say, this doesn’t feel anything like an animal,” he said.
Howard said that the farm would be having a big art show and auction in August. The whole barn will be transferred into a gallery. More than 50 artists participate.
“We get several hundred art pieces, most of them are of the farm and pictures of the Galloways, but we get some really nice coastal scenes, too,” he said.
