Camden-Rockport third graders stage ‘Home by the Sea’

CAMDEN — In a performance that filled the Camden Opera House Thursday evening, May 7, the Camden-Rockport Elementary School third grade class staged the annual popular musical play, Home by the Sea, written and directed by CRES teacher Scott Dyer.
The play is a unique and personal exploration of the history of Camden and Rockport, filled with singing and humor. The entire third grade produces and acts in the 90-minute play, and the students reenact the town’s history infused with fun.
Acts include bear riding and the invention of the doughnut hole.
New this year was a musical skit about New England accents and phonetics, especially the habit of missing “R”s in enunciation of words.
Students also acted out advertisements for historical area products, including lime, and they touched on the regional economic engines of shipbuilding and sheep shearing.
Home by the Sea even saw a visit from Camden’s famous poet, Edna St. Vincent Millay.
The play was sponsored by Youth Arts, the local nonprofit that encourages the arts in public schools.
