Memorial rock, power pole take hit in Rockland accident
ROCKLAND — Brakes apparently failed for the driver of a 1999 Dodge Sunday night, resulting in the vehicle hitting a utility pole and then landing on Memorial Rock near the Rankin Block.
According to Rockland police, Jonathon Ashley, 22, of Union, was driving north on Main Street in Rockland at 8:28 p.m., Oct. 28. As he attempted to turn left onto North Main Street from Main at the Rankin Block, his brakes failed. He struck the pole, and then the rock at the Ralph Ulmer Square, where the Dodge came to a stop.
The pole then fell, landing to the east, onto Main Street. Melissa Sullivan Fortuna, 49, of Rockport, was driving that road in her 1967 Toyota when she collided with the pole, which broke her windshield.
Both drivers were uninjured. Ashley's Dodge is considered a total wreck; the telephone pole damages are estimated at $1,000, the plaque, $300.
