First Friday Community Dance, Contra Dance, June 6
BELFAST — On Friday, June 6, shoes will fly at the First Friday Community Dance & Contra Dance.
The intergenerational program begins at 6 p.m., when the Flying Shoes All Comers Band warms up and chooses tunes with ACB leader, Julia McDonald-Plumb. The band is open to all ages, instruments, and skill levels; tunes are posted at belfastflyingshoes.org. The quick-to-learn Community Dance starts at 6:30 p.m.
This month, the 8 p.m. Contra Dance welcomes a caller and musicians visiting Flying Shoes for the first time. Boston-based caller Harris Lapiroff joins Rosemary Powell and Troy Horner of the band Here on the Hill to offer up satisfying dances and whimsical tunes from the New England repertoire and beyond.
The First Church is at 8 Court Street in Belfast.
Admission is $15-25 for the whole evening. (For just the first hour’s Community Dance, admission is $1 kids/$2 adults.) For info, First Friday FAQ, and BFS Community Care Policy, visit www.belfastflyingshoes.org
Support for Belfast Flying Shoes and its nonprofit programs comes from the Belfast Community Co-op, GO Logic, Thomas Fowler PE, the Belfast Bay Fiddlers, the Green Store, and other local sponsors, grantors, and individual contributors.
Founded in 2005, Belfast Flying Shoes builds community and cultivates well-being through the joy of traditional music and dance for people of all backgrounds and identities in Midcoast Maine. Among its diverse programs are arts residencies in local schools.
