Painting by Spruce Head artist chosen for Smithsonian exhibit
A painting entitled “Alternatives” by Spruce Head artist Katharine Cartwright is now on exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. in an exhibition entitled “ArtxClimate.” The exhibition features works of art that were selected by the US Global Change Research Program for the Fifth Annual National Climate Assessment published in 2023.
The work was honored to be among the top ten selected for this report, according to Cartwright, in a news release.
“This work is an aesthetic interpretation of five viable alternatives to petroleum-based energy: biofuel, wind turbines, geothermal plants, hydroelectric dams, and solar panels," she said. "The interconnection of the symbols used for each energy source emphasizes a combined approach to a long-term feasible solution. Environmentally friendly materials used in this painting include cotton paper and water-based pigments.”
