Rockport morning crash attributed to speeding, phone check

ROCKPORT — Camden First Aid Association transported the driver of a pickup truck to Pen Bay Medical Center at approximately 8 a.m. Monday after she left the road, traveled into a grassy field for 100 feet, through the air, and came to a halt against a tree.
Rockport Police Officer Dana Smith said Tammy Banville, of Camden, was heading east on Main Street when, as she was apparently checked her mobile phone contacts, veered to the opposite side of the road. The truck, a 2008 Sierra, continued to travel alongside the left side of the road when it hit a collapsed culvert, went airborne for 30 feet, and then hit a small tree.
Banville, 33, was wearing a seatbelt and the driver's airbag deployed. She was transported to the hospital, suffering neck and back pain.
Smith attributed the crash to speed and mobile phone use. He issued Banville a summons for failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
He said the truck was a total loss due to major front-end damage and a bent frame. Smith advises drivers to pull over to the side of the road before trying access information on a mobile phone.
