Large thunderstorms, heavy rain moves over Belfast, Camden, greater Midcoast
Sheets of rain, loud thunder and heavy hail accompanied fast-moving thunderstorms Monday afternoon, with possible wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour predicted by the National Weather Service.
Preceding the storms, the winds shifted around, depending which thunderstorm carried a heavier force.
At 3:26 p.m., the weather service posted warnings for Knox and Waldo counties, saying radar indicated a cluster of strong thunderstorms centered over Appleton moving east at 35 miles per hour. The service also prediced hail up to three-quarter-inches in diameter, confirmed by residents of Lincolnville, who reported massive hail falling there.
Another warning was issued for mariners, from Stonington to Port Clyde, including Penobscot Bay, with the possibility of winds of 34 knots or greater, with high waves, dangerous lightning and heavy rain. Boaters were advised to seek safe harbor.
A severe thunderstorm remains in effect until 9 p.m.
