William D. Bishop, obituary
CAMDEN — William Donald Bishop, 82, of Camden, died May 11, 2013, at Waldo County General Hospital. Born in Bridgeport, Conn., Dec. 21, 1930, he was the son of Valentine M. and Catherine P. (Griffin) Bishop and he was a 1949 graduate of Bassick High School in Bridgeport. During his first employment at Don's Drug Store at the age of 14, Don wore a white jacket and sold ice cream and Coca-Cola.
In January 1951, Don joined the U.S. Navy and served until 1954 training with radar equipment. He then studied electrical engineering at the University of Bridgeport, working nights at the Bridgeport Post counting newspapers for home delivery. His next employment was with Sikorsky Aircraft, where he made helicopter tail rotor blades. He also worked with the Connecticut State Police patrolling the Merritt Parkway. For 10 years, Don worked at Con Diesel in Greenwich, and in 1978 enlisted in the U.S. Army, later serving in the Army Reserves. During Desert Storm he worked as a cost accountant at the Milford Armory, retiring in 1983 due to his health.
In 1991, he moved to New Canaan and joined the Masons, the Blue Lodge and the York Rite, receiving his 32nd degree. In 2001, he moved to Camden with his close friend, Mary Suzanne Batty Pennoyer. Don was a member of John Street United Methodist Church and the Amity Masonic Lodge.
Surviving is his wife, Mary S. Bishop of Camden; one daughter, Donna M. Bishop-Schreiber of Fairfield, Conn.; one grandson, Jason D. Schreiber of Fairfield, Conn.; his stepchildren, Allan Pennoyer of Florida, Karin G. Skomars and her husband, Scott, of New Hartford, Conn., Stephen E. Pennoyer of Camden and Suzanne M. DeRosa and her husband, Thomas, of Farmington, Conn.; his step-grandchildren, Victoria Pennoyer, Christopher Faulbourn, Justin Faulbourn and Hailey, Hunter and Sara DeRosa; his brothers-in-law, John Batty of Rockland, David Roes of Manchester and Gerald L. Mather of Spruce Head; and two sisters-in-law, Jane Thompson of Warren and Gretchen Batty-LeBlanc of S. Norwalk, Conn.
A funeral service was held May 15 at John Street United Methodist Church in Camden. The Rev. Peg Moser officiated. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden.
