What's happening out there?

Trees just keep going down, and as the night goes on, area firefighters and public works crews continue to respond to incidents that involve trees falling on wires, or in roadways. It has been that way since late this afternoon; in some cases, power was cut and then restored, in other cases, the power remains out.
On the Mountain Road in Warren, a tree took down a wire, which cut electricity to area residences. In Camden, a tree falling onto a wire on Melvin Heights Road cut power to a number of roads in Camden, Rockport and Hope, but power was restored by 6:40 p.m.
A tree came down in Camden, blocking Mechanic Street for a little bit until crews cleared it away. A little later, another tree came down on High Street (Route 1). The highway has since been cleared.
Camden's Fire Department also responded to two small unattended fires at the Camden Snow Bowl, which were extinguished. No further details were immediately available.
In Lincolnville, a tree fell on a wire on Moody Mountain Road, and similar situation took place on Clary Hill Road in Union. Another fell on Shepard Hill Road, and another across Route 17. And another, in Washington, and Thomaston.
A tree also fell on a wire on Talbot Ave., in Rockland, taking out the power, and Rockport Fire Department responded to Pascal Ave. for the report of a blown transformer.
In all of the cases, the fire departments and others have quickly been clearing the roadways.

At 9 p.m. Central Maine Power Company (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, reported more than 71,000 homes and businesses lost power as high winds from Hurricane Sandy. Southern and coastal areas have borne the brunt of the storm today with extensive power outages in Cumberland, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, and York counties. Reports of outages began in the early afternoon, but rose rapidly shortly after 3 p.m. CMP expects the outage count will continue to climb as high winds spread over the state.
"As long as the outages keep mounting, public safety will be our priority tonight," said Tom DePeter, director of electrical distribution for CMP, in the release. "Our crews will focus on de-energizing downed lines and damaged equipment to keep people safe and so roads can be cleared. Our priority for restoration will be to maintain service to key facilities such as hospitals, shelters, and public safety buildings."
CMP expects the work of securing all downed equipment will continue through the night. The company will begin work on Tuesday morning with a workforce of nearly 1,000 line workers, tree crews, supervisors, assessors, and safety specialists in the field to assess system damage and begin repairs on core system components including transmission lines and 3-phase feeder lines to critical public facilities such as hospitals and shelters.
