Waldo County Sheriff’s Office uses social media to nab thief
TROY — The Waldo County Sheriff's Office says public assistance through social media led to the identification of a suspect in the theft of $56 from a store counter. The incident occurred at the Troy General Store, June 3. A customer placed money on the counter, only to have it stolen when they briefly became distracted.
A man in the store at the same time reportedly picked up the money and left the store, according to a press release from the Waldo County Sheriff's Office.
A review of video surveillance produced a picture of the suspect, and the vehicle he was operating.
The Sheriff's Office turned to their Facebook page in an effort to identify the suspect, posting the pictures obtained from the store video and asking the public for any information they may have. The post received 151 shares and over 10,000 views.
The suspect in the video, Paul Dunphy, 61, of Clinton, was reportedly made aware by friends that his picture was circulating on social media, and he called law enforcement June 6.
Dunphy reportedly admitted his responsibility for the theft and was issued a summons for the offense.
