UPDATED: Lifeflight called to Waldoboro crash

WALDOBORO — A two-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Waldoboro Sunday afternoon sent one Qubec woman to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by helicopter.
The accident occurred near Moose Crossing and Bullwinkle’s Restaurant at approximately 1:50 p.m., Aug. 11.
According to witnesses, the accident involved two vehicles, both heading north, a Toyoya sedan and a Ford 150 pickup. The Toyota, from Quebec and owned by Francois Gagnon, 55, apparently rear-ended the pickup, according to witnesses. The truck, also from Quebec and owned by Roy Cormier, 66, spun around and came to rest in the southbound lane headed south. The car wound up in a ditch off the shoulder of the northbound lane.
According to Waldoboro police, Cormier was stopped on Route 1, attempting to make a left-hand turn when it was rear-ended by Gagnon. The truck sustained damage to its rear end and rear driver’s side quarter. The Toyota was totaled, according to police.
Ariane Pelletier, 55, of Quebec, was a passenger in the Toyota. She sustained injuries and was transported to Central Maine Medical Center.
“It was a hard impact,” said Waldoboro Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer, who responded to the accident with firefighters. Waldoboro police and EMS also responded to the scene, which closed Route 1 for approximately 90 minutes. Traffic was rerouted to Old Route 1, which runs parallel to Route 1.
The other two in the accident were uninjured.
After Pelletier was on the helicopter and as firefighters were just about to help load the Toyota onto a tow truck, the sedan caught fire.
According to witness Mike Scarborough, Waldoboro ambulances arrived quickly to the scene, treated the passenger, moved her to a stretcher and then the Lifeflight helicopter.
As first responders attempted to put the car onto a flatbed, the fire started in the Toyota’s engine compartment. Police and EMS extinguished the fire with fire extinguishers in their vehicles. Firefighters doused the engine compartment and cut the battery cables, and the wrecked sedan was then placed on the flatbed.
