UPDATED: CMP crews restore power to more than 100,000 customers as ice storm recovery continues
AUGUSTA — Central Maine Power Company reports it has restored service to more than 105,000 customer accounts affected by this week's ice storm. As of 5 p.m., the company reports an estimated 17,000 customers are still without power stating that it has made steady progress since the number of outages peaked at 87,000 on Tuesday morning. The utility estimates more than 123,000 customers have lost service at some point during the storm.
"We continued to make progress today, despite the snow which made travel and working conditions difficult," said CMP spokesman John Carroll in a news release. "We will continue to work toward today's goal to reduce outage numbers to fewer than 10,000 by late tonight."
Carroll added that the final stages of service recovery can be very labor intensive and time consuming.
"We're often working on narrow, rural roads or rights of way, and a crew may work for hours to restore service to only one or two customers."
CMP reports that it has deployed 2,200 personnel in the storm recovery, including 455 two-man line crews and 450 tree crews. The company expects to restore power to the majority of customers by late tonight, although snow and difficult working conditions are likely to push the final restoration into Friday, especially for customers in rural areas or where access is difficult.
