UPDATE: Police identify pedestrian who died after being hit by car in Rockport
ROCKPORT — A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in early evening hours of Dec. 18.
Camden-Rockport Police Chief Randy Gagne reported that Maxine Stanley, 82, of Rockport, was fatally struck by a motor vehicle operated by Timothy Sawtelle, 61, of Albion on Route 17 near Lake Chickawaukie in Rockport.
Knox County Communications received a call of a vehicle-pedestrian accident at 4:39 p.m.
Rockport firefighters, Rockport and Camden police, and ambulance crews from Northeast Mobile Health responded.
According to Gagne, Stanley was attempting to cross the road from a neighbor’s house to her own residence across the street.
“Stanley was wearing dark clothing at the time and was in the middle of the west bound lane when she was fatally struck,” Gagne said. “The accident remains under investigation by Sgt. James Moore of the Rockport Police Department and is being reconstructed by the Maine State Police.”
That stretch of Route 17 had been shut down for several hours as police investigated.
