Train Station centennial donations return to Rockland
ROCKLAND – The $5 donation by each attendee of the Rockland train station’s 100th anniversary celebration two weeks ago remains in Rockland, has spread a little further, and will be seen, in part, by the community in November.
When organizers of the Rockland at Trackside Station requested a $5 admission donation for the anniversary event, the intended fundraiser recipient was Rockland Main Street Inc, according to Gordon Page, of Rockland Main Street, Inc.
The event accumulated $650 in donations.
“When I accepted the money from them at that time, I said ‘we’re going to share that money with the Historical Society,’” said Page.
Tuesday, Sept. 18, in a brief exchange during the dedication ceremony for the Tillson Avenue watering trough re-installation, Historical Society President Brian Harden and Curator Ann Morris accepted a $250 share of that fund.
The other $400 will remain with Main Street as funding for their latest project, lighting up Main Street for Christmas.
“It’s an effort to put lights in the trees up and down the street and in the nearby established parks,” he said.
A Gofundme page for the project states: “This year, the Design and Streetscapes committee of Rockland Main Street, Inc. is planning to light up Main Street in other ways to brighten the downtown district by adding illumination on the trees in the parks and along the street. The Lobster Trap Tree will be the starting point for this project, and the lighted natural trees will enhance the overall appearance and ambiance during the winter months....
“The total amount raised will determine how many trees we can light this year; the $3,000 goal is the minimum the group needs to make a significant visual impact. More funds means more lights.”
