ROCKLAND — Sten Robert Runius, 90, died May 18, 2014, at Pen Bay Medical Center, after a brief illness. He was always proud of, and willing to converse about his Swedish heritage.

Born, raised and educated in Quincy, Mass., he lived in that city until moving to Arlington, Va.

Mr. Runius was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, who fought in five campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge, the Normandy Invasion, Northern France, the Rhineland and the Ardennes.

After graduating high school in 1942, he worked as a graduate draftsman apprentice with Bethlehem Steel Fore River Ship Yard in Quincy. In April 1967, he began working in Washington, D.C., as a naval architect technician, with the Bureau of Ships/U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Mr. Runius moved here following his retirement in 1985. He was an active member of Rockland Congregational Church, where he served as a past deacon and usher. He served more than 7,500 hours as a volunteer at Pen Bay Medical Center.

His love of Cadillac automobiles, caused him to be a regular visitor at the Owls Head Transportation Museum.

Mr. Runius is survived by one son, Mark R. Runius and his wife, Lauri, of Warren; two grandchildren, Benjamin Mark Runius and his wife, Samantha, and Meghan Cherie Runius and her companion, Jarrod Bergeron.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Tuesday, May 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland, where a funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 28 at 3 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Linwood Welch will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in Mount Walaston Cemetery in Quincy, Mass.
