State police, Maine DEA discover Northport meth lab
NORTHPORT — Maine State Police troopers and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency continue to investigate the discovery Friday of a methamphetamine lab inside a Northport home, according to spokesman Steve McCausland. This is the state's second meth lab discovered this year. Last year, the Maine DEA found more than 50 methamphetamine labs around the state.
McCausland said troopers found the lab inside the house at 97 Prescott Hill Road while conducting a check on the home's occupant, who was out on bail on unrelated drug charges.
While at the house, troopers again arrested 38-year-old Melinda "Mindy" Way for allegedly violating her bail conditions. She was initially taken to Waldo County Jail and later transferred to Two Bridges Jail in Wiscasset.
The MDEA meth lab team responded to the home Friday night and seized a substantial amount of evidence allegedly related to the manufacturing of methamphetamine. Way and a second person, are expected to be charged on the drug manufacturing violations, likely next week, said McCausland in the release.
Way and two others were arrested by State Police in April 2015 for forging checks from two Belfast businesses and cashing them in excess of $8,000 to allegedly purchase drugs.
Way was the bookkeeper for the businesses, according to police.
Most methamphetamine in Maine is made by mixing ingredients in containers like 20 ounce plastic soda bottles, known as “one pot” or “shake and bake” labs, according to the state’s department of health and human services. Because this method is portable, producers often discard plastic bottles that may contain toxic or flammable chemicals on the side of the road. One pot labs can be located anywhere. If you find a discarded plastic bottle that contains an unknown substance, do not pick it up or open it. Call your local police or sheriff about the possible danger.
In 2012 there were 11 methamphetamine incidents in Maine, with six of those occurring in Aroostook County. Methamphetamine lab investigations can cost over $15,000 each to pay for MDEA teams, chemical protective gear, and hazmat teams from the Department of Environmental Protection. Local municipal costs for police, fire and EMTs as well as cleanup costs to the homeowner or property owner can cost additional thousands of dollars.
